Detroit was first called Paris of the West because of its architecture, and for Washington Boulevard, which at the time, had been electrified for the very first time by Thomas Edison's incandescent lightbulb in 1883. It was turned on in front of a crowd of spectators at Metcalf Bros. dry goods store.
